Local Organizations Host 'Talk & Text Family Night' in Pelham

PELHAM, N.Y. – Due to the pressures in society on teenagers, such as alcohol and drug abuse as well as bullying and sexting, the Pelham Guidance Council and the Junior League of Pelham are the sponsors for “Talk & Text Family Night,” which will be held on Tuesday at the Picture House.

The event, which will start at 6:30 p.m., invites all teens and their parents to view a reality style documentary, “American Teen,” which examines high school students' lives and the issues they face each day. While most movie theaters do not allow texting during movies, teens and their parents are encouraged to text comments throughout the film.

An interactive discussion with Cheryl Bobe, the director of the Pelham Guidance Council, will also be a part of the program.

The Pelham Guidance Council, a local Pelham organization since 1970, helps students as they go through school with a goal to educate and prevent social or substance abuse issues.

The Junior League of Pelham, Inc. is a women's organization dedicated to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers, according to a press release from the group.

The program was put together by those two groups because alcohol abuse and binge drinking among Pelham teens surpasses the national average, according to a recent Prevention Needs Assessment survey, the group said.

Admission to the event is free, but seating is limited and therefore people are encouraged to arrive early.
