Pelham Village Board Bolsters Fire Department

The Pelham Fire Department will have a new lieutenant and a new car thanks to the Village of Pelham Board of Trustees.

At Tuesday night's board meeting, before the debate and argument about the status of Hillside and Brookside avenues, the board passed two resolutions that directly affected Pelham's fire department.

The first, which passed unanimously, appointed Albert Bucaj to the position of lieutenant in the fire department. Bucaj's brother already serves as lieutenant.

Bucaj did not attend the meeting, but Mayor Ed Hotchkiss recalled a story in which Bucaj saved the life of a moving and storage worker as a member of the EMT service for the department. Hotchkiss said Bucaj "has always been very conscientious."

The second resolution accepted a car donation from the Mount Vernon Fire Department for the fire chief of Pelham. Hotchkiss said the board worried the chief's current car would not make it to work every day, so they searched for another and discovered that Mount Vernon had an SUV with approximately 95,000 miles on it.

The vehicle is already tailor-made for fire department use and holds an approximate value of $3,800.
