Pelham Picture House Closes for Stage Renovations

PELHAM, N.Y. – The Pelham Picture House will close for about four weeks starting Wednesday while a stage is constructed in front of the screen in the main theater.

Currently, only a platform covering an old organ pit sits below the screen. Pelham Picture House Executive Director Jennifer Christman said the platform will be replaced.

"That will be taken out of the theater and a proper stage will be built that's significantly larger than that," Christman said. "It'll be to really enhance our film programming."

The stage will be 40 feet wide and 12 feet deep.

The Picture House hosts speakers and guests in the theater but could not seat them on the platform. Now, the landmark can elevate speakers so those in the back of the theater can see them clearly.

Christman said the Picture House might start to put on some live performances once the stage construction ends. The stage could also enhance the theater's film education courses.

Christman said repairs could take more than four weeks but hopes it will not exceed that length.
