PELHAM, N.Y. Shoppers packed DeCicco Food Market on Fifth Avenue on Saturday as they made last-minute preparations for the impending arrival of Hurricane Irene. The store has been noticeably busier since Thursday.
Owner John DeCicco said that the store has sold plenty of emergency supplies to customers as the hurricane has moved up the East Coast.
"We went through two trailers of water in the past three days," DeCicco said. "And batteries. We cleaned through batteries."
DeCicco said that he was able to bring in extra help to handle the increased amount of customers because he runs a family operation. He called some younger members of his family to assist him.
Some customers at the supermarket had already purchased the necessary supplies, while others bought cases of water, batteries and flashlights.
Janice Imundi, a longtime Pelham Manor resident, had already stocked up on water, milk, juice and bread. She also had batteries and flashlights at home.
Imundi worried more about the condition of her house than she did about purchasing supplies.
"I'm more concerned about water in the house because we're in a low lying area," Imundi said.
The Pelham Manor resident said that her house has only flooded twice in 27 years. Her husband checked all the furniture and drains to be safe.
