PELHAM, N.Y. Two Pelham gas stations had booming business on Friday before Hurricane Irene and neither had problems pumping gas in the aftermath.
Paul Bencivengo Jr., who runs the Gulf gas station and auto repair shop at the same location on Wolfs Lane, closes his station on Saturdays and Sundays in August. Still, he said if the hurricane caused any problems, he would have resolved them himself on Sunday.
"If there was a major power outage, I would have been here to pump gas," Bencivengo said.
Bencivengo's station has a backup generator, which he would have used to help supply customers with gas in the aftermath of the storm. He said he tripled his volume on Friday as people bought gas in preparation for the hurricane.
Peter Telesco, who owns the Citgo station just a few yards away, also closes his station on weekends in August. He, too, said his business increased on Friday, though he pointed out that the hurricane made for unsafe conditions for motorists.
"You couldn't drive anywhere anyway," Telesco said.
Telesco said he also had no problems pumping gas for customers when he reopened his station.
