Pelham and Pelham Manor... Did You Know?

PELHAM, N.Y. – Did you know that Pelham Memorial High School was dedicated on May 6, 1922 to honor those who fought in the First World War, according to the school's website. An inscription above the school auditorium reads “Honor here the ideals for which they fought,” referring to the men and women who served.

The school was constructed because Siwanoy Elementary was “no longer big enough to house both grammar and secondary students,” the website said. The location chosen for the building once belonged to Col. Philip Pell.

When the school was dedicated, it was the biggest in Westchester County and sections  that were added to accommodate increased enrollment brought the final cost to $575,000 in 1929.

New additions to the school throughout the years have included a new wing, science, modern language and computer labs, art rooms, “state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment in the auditorium” and Alumni Hall.

The school was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 1993, the website said.

Pelham Memorial wraps up its 90th year on Friday as its students take their last classes of the school year.
