Mount Vernon resident Robert Campbell has been arraigned on an indictment charging him with the murder of Diesel Mercedes in July last year. Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. noted that the incident came about due to their relationship with the same woman.

On July 1 last year, Campbell and Mercedes both attended the same afternoon party on South Ninth Avenue in Mount Vernon. Campbell allegedly shot his victim twice in the head with a .380 caliber pistol as he was sitting in a nearby car.

Scarpino said that at the time of the shooting, Mercedes’ 2-year-old daughter was in the backseat of the car. After being shot, Mercedes went into a coma and survived until he was pronounced dead on Oct. 25 last year.

Campbell, 40, was charged with murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment, all felonies or violent felonies. Campbell is currently being held on $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 19.
