Man Smashes Property at Pelham Manor Gas Station

PELHAM MANOR, N.Y. –  A customer at a Pelham Manor gas station who was angry because his credit card didn’t work reached into the cashier’s booth, grabbed a credit card reader and smashed it.

Police were called to the Shell gas station at 4391 Boston Post Road at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday. An employee told police that a customer tried to use a debit or credit card at one of the pumps however,  the card would not work. The man spoke to a female employee who tried to help him.

The employee also could not get the card to work and told the man that the card was no good. The customer became irate and started yelling at the woman. She asked him not to take his anger out on her, but he reached into the open cash drawer and pulled out a VeriFone debit and credit card reader from the counter top inside the cashier's booth. He smashed the device on the ground and damaged it.

The man then drove towards the Bronx in a gray Toyota Camry. The woman did not learn the man's name, but video cameras captured the incident. Police intend to obtain a copy of the video.

- Pelham Manor police responded to a call about a suspicious man in the area of Boston Post Road and West Street on Saturday at about 12:40 a.m. The man allegedly had been asking for money from customers leaving the Gulf gas station and had been looking into cars parked in the area. Police arrested the man for public urination because he had been standing in front of Cornell Carpets urinating on the sidewalk. The man denied looking into the cars.

- About five minutes later, police arrested a man who had been with the man arrested for public urination. The man had an active grand larceny warrant from the Mount Vernon Police Department and an active burglary warrant from Virginia Beach, Va. Pelham Manor police released the man to Mount Vernon officers who planned to arrange for extradition to Virginia.
