Get to Know... Pelham Police Officer Earl Scott

Pelham Police Officer Earl Scott has been on the force since August of 2008 and is grateful that he became a cop in the town he has always called home. While there are trying days on the job, he has enjoyed his time as a cop, and does not envision leaving Pelham anytime soon.

Why did you want to become a cop?

“I guess it started when I was young. A lot of my friends, we all wanted to be cops. You see the cop car speed by with the lights and sirens on, and you’re like, “Oh man, they’re going to some adventure or something.” Then as you get older, you start seeing what it really involves. It’s not so much the adventure. More of getting out into the community, speaking with people, letting them get to know you. Letting everyone know you’re there for them and if you like people, it’s the job for you.”

What is the best part about your job?

"That’s the best part. Being able to work with kids and being able to make a difference in someone’s life. I had a lady write a letter to the Pelham Weekly once stating how, you know she had a husband that passed away this day, and she wrote a nice letter that stated I was really there for her. Just having someone there to comfort her in her time of need. Stuff like that, it makes you feel like you’re doing something good.”

What’s the most difficult part about being a cop?

“I’d say, well, I’ll be diplomatic – dealing with the same people over and over with the same issues over and over. You know, just some issues that you would like to change that seems like no matter how hard you try, but the person or the situation just never changes. It gets really frustrating.”

What is your schedule like?

“We work steady schedules. Right now, I’m assigned to the three to eleven tour. We work five days, we’re off for two, then we work five, and we’re off for three. So every other weekend, it goes forward a day.”

You’ve been a Pelham resident your whole life?

“Yea, God, it’s gonna be 28 years. I’m gonna be 28 in January.”

Family-wise, any siblings?

“One sister, she’s 25.”

Where do you see yourself in the future? Do you want to stay in Pelham?

“Absolutely, like I said, I was born and raised here. Nothing can make me happier than to see the village that brought me up and made me the person I am continues to run smoothly and safely.”

Favorite TV show?

“Southland”

Favorite Movie?

“Favorite movie would have to be Heat.”

Favorite Actor?

“Eddie Murphy.”

Favorite Actress?

“Actress… Let’s go with, that’s a tough one, either Sandra Bullock or Julia Robert. I guess one of those two.”

Favorite Meal?

“I’m like a garbage compactor. I pretty much eat everything. Something from Pelham Pizza.”
