PELHAM, N.Y. Yorktown Heights resident Susan Sepulveda has sold gifts and personalized items to three generations of customers at Sue's Corner on Fifth Avenue.
"We're doing things for the children of the children," said Sepulveda, who opened the store 40 years ago. "Scary."
Sepulveda said her store has survived for so many years because she does all the personalization and artwork herself and does not have to pay an artist. She had been doing artwork for other stores 40 years ago and decided to do it for herself by opening her own store.
Sue's Corner has two storefronts. One contains what Sepulveda calls the "bread and butter money" of party favors, birthday gifts and similar items. The second area, which Sepulveda added 25 years ago, holds general gifts such as holiday decorations.
Sepulveda said the personal touch has kept her customers coming back through the door.
"They love it," Sepulveda said. "You can't go to Target and get that. They get a unique gift here."
Sue's Corner displays gifts from wall to wall in both sections of the store. Baskets that read "Alexandra's Books" and rocking horses with names painted on the base decorate the counters.
Sepulveda lives in Yorktown Heights with her husband. She still enjoys her job after four decades of service to the Pelham community.
"I like going to work every day," Sepulveda said. "I certainly could have made more as a teacher, but I enjoy the people."
