'Surprising' Pelham Art Show Enters Final Days

PELHAM, N.Y. – A Pelham Art Center art show that has been surprising viewers since May 4 will be closing June 30.

"We’re very excited about the show because it represents a nice mix of artists who are both sort of younger and emerging with more established artists who are in collections around the world,” gallery and public program manager Laura Koo Nicholas said of "Light Matter." "It’s really cool to have it in Pelham and have the works together."

Most of the six artists, who combine for 23 works, are from New York City, while one is from Maine. Their pieces “harness and explore light – dazzling and ordinary – as both subject and form,” curator Lisa Banner said.

Exhibit visitors have liked the “element of surprise,” Nicholas said.

“They look at it and they think it’s one thing. When they hear about the process or what it’s made of, they’re surprised again by how ordinary the materials are and yet they look so spectacular,” she said.

Everyday items such as chalk, a white board, a dry erase marker, ink and construction paper are used in the exhibit. Nicholas said it is “very grounded in basic materials.”

She said she hoped people would stop by and look at the exhibit before it ends this weekend.

“It’s a unique opportunity to see these artists and it’s only up for a short time,” Nicholas said.

The next exhibition at the center is the Faculty and Student Showcase from July 13 to Aug. 10.
