PELHAM, N.Y. -- The Picture House’s spring fundraiser ‘The Tenth! – Celebrate What a Decade Can Do’ was held on Friday, May 15th at the Hampshire Country Club in Mamaroneck.
The fundraiser celebrated the tenth anniversary of the purchase of the 1921 theater.
Guests kicked-off the night with cocktails overlooking the Sound, followed by dinner, a live auction and paddle raise and dancing. To end the evening, guests, led by vocalist Emily Claman, sang Happy Birthday as co-founders Ann Sorice and Thomas Peer cut the cake—made in the shape of The Picture House’s iconic 1921 theater by Provisions Bake Shop in Pelham.
Picture House co-founder Ann Sorice and filmmaker Matthew Heineman were this year’s honorees at the fundraiser.
Sorice, who was presented with the Harold Lloyd Commitment to Community award by New York State Assemblywoman Amy Paulin (D-88), gave a heartfelt speech co-founding The Picture House.
Oscar-nominated and Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress Jane Alexander presented the Sundance 2015 best director and cinematographer (documentary) winner, filmmaker Matthew Heineman, with the Harold Lloyd Next Generation Filmmaker Award.
“It is such a privilege and honor to just show up with a camera and have people open up their lives to me. Ultimately through this process I fell in love with filmmaking,” Heineman said.
A trailer for Heineman’s latest documentary film "Cartel Land," which had just been locked earlier in the day, was shown to guests on screens the ballroom. The film which, has already received rave reviews and awards from film festivals around the country, will be previewed at The Picture House in late June before opening nationwide in July. Heineman will be on-hand at the screening for a post-film Q&A and discussion.
Proceeds from ‘The Tenth!’ will help further preserve the 1921 theatre and enable the organization to pursue The Picture House’s mission to create a shared community experience for diverse audiences through film, education programming, and unique cultural offerings
