Pelham Thinks Ahead To Frightening Fun With 'Frankenstein'

PELHAM, N.Y. -- Fall may seem a long way off, but it’s actually not too early to start thinking about Frankenstein – yes, Frankenstein – because the famous human-like monster will be all over Pelham in October.

Frankenstein will be the centerpiece of a communitywide, monthlong event in October called “Pelham Reads.”

The book “Frankenstein,” written by Mary Shelley in 1818, will be the centerpiece of a communitywide, monthlong event called “Pelham Reads.” The Pelham Picture House and the Pelham Art Center are partnering with the library so the Frankenstein theme will be experienced and discussed as a book, in film and as art.

The library’s participation in the event is sponsored by the Friends of the Pelham Public Library.

“Frankenstein” was chosen for the first “Pelham Reads” for a number of reasons, including its relevance to 2013.

"It's a literary classic, but it has all these modern themes, like the moral dilemmas posed by scientific advancement,” said Mary Callahan, a member of the Friends, in a prepared statement. “People who haven't read the book -- or haven't read it in a while -- will be surprised at how different it is from the Frankenstein story that we know from movies and popular culture.”

While the library will host several events, including discussions of Frankenstein, the Picture House is planning a Frankenstein film festival, and the Art Center’s fall sculpture exhibit and art workshops will center on the theme.

“What is so extraordinary about this collaboration is that residents will be able to experience the Frankenstein theme on multiple levels and through various lenses,” said Lynn Honeysett, executive director of the Art Center.

The event still is in the planning stages, and local book clubs and organizations are encouraged to get involved. For more information, email pelhamreads@gmail.com.
