Authorities are warning Hudson Valley residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate sheriff’s office personnel and demand payment via gift cards. The scam has been reported in Putnam County, the county's Sheriff's Office announced on Friday, Nov. 22. Hours-Long Standoff Ends In Suicide In Area
A tense hours-long standoff ended when an area resident with a rifle killed himself. Putnam County Sheriff Robert Langley, Jr. said the incident unfolded around 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 23, when the town of Kent Ambulance along with the EmStar medics were dispatched to Pudding Street in the Town of Putnam Valley for a man with chest pain. The medic unit was first on scene and was confronted by a man with a shotgun. Man With Revoked License Caught Riding Lawn Tractor Drunk, Sheriff Says
A man with his license revoked for a previous DWI was busted driving a lawn tractor down a Dutchess County highway, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Milan resident Joseph White, 53, was arrested shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, after a deputy sheriff on patrol on Route 199 in Milan found him operating a lawn tractor on the highway with an open alcoholic beverage in tow, Dutchess County Sheriff Lt. A sheriff’s deputy apprehended a man in possession of semiautomatic weapons after he allegedly attempted to resist arrest following a traffic stop on I-84 in Putnam County. Putnam County Sheriff Robert Langley, Jr. announced the arrest of New Mexico resident Pedro Ruiz-Rivas on Monday, who is facing charges that include two felony counts of criminal possession of a firearm, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and other violations. Officials are warning residents about a phone scam sweeping the area in which the caller claims to a representative of the Sheriff's Office civil division and demands payment for a legal matter. Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois said a scam of that type was operating recently in Cayuga County, where the caller said they were from the civil division and that the resident must go purchase a pre-paid Visa card and pay the money owed or face legal trouble.
