PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Peekskill native Elton Brand, a former New York State Mr. Basketball at Peekskill High School, Duke University basketball star and an NBA first-round pick by the Chicago Bulls, is set to be released from his contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to ESPN.
Brand, who could not be reached for comment, will be set free under the league's amnesty clause to free salary cap space so the 76ers can sign free-agent guard Nick Young and re-sign their center Spencer Hawes.
The local basketball star, who supports his Elton Brand Foundation to aid local schools, returns to his hometown often and will visit in early August for his annual youth basketball camp.
Brand will still collect the full $18 million owed to him for next season, but will first be offered to teams under the salary cap through the waiver process, with under-the-cap teams able to lodge bids for him. If Brand goes unclaimed on waivers, he would then be eligible to sign as a free agent.
