PEEKSKILL, N.Y. While several Peekskill High School students have taken their athletic talents to the state championships in recent years, some students are hoping their talents can get them to Broadway.
District music student Afua Yeboah, a sophomore; junior Samantha Calderon; and senior Darrel Kidd have been selected to advance in the prestigious Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Vocal Competition.
The Feinstein competition was established in 2009 and is a based solely on music from Broadway, Hollywood musicals and the Tin Pan Alley era of the early to mid-20th century. Should any of the students win in the regional round, they will participate in a weeklong vocal training camp before a final competition in June for cash awards and the chance to perform with Michael Feinstein onstage in New York.
At Tuesday's Board of Education meeting Yeboah was brought onstage by music teachers Lawrence Del Casale and John Hahn to perform a rendition of "Over the Rainbow." Board members and district officials were also treated to a live performance of John Coltrane's classic composition "Equinox" by members of the high school jazz band. Video from that performance can be seen here.
"We can all be very proud of these hard-working and talented students who have worked so hard for this opportunity," Del Casale said. "I am so pleased that they'll have the chance to perform in a bigger arena."
