PEEKSKILL, N.Y. - Students will leave Our Lady of Assumption in Peekskill for the last time this week.
After more than 100 years of educating children in Peekskill, the school has been closed by the Archdiocese of New York.
About 200 students were enrolled at the Assumption School, in kindergarten through eighth grade, as well as a sizable class of preschoolers. Some of those students probably would enroll at Catholic schools in Ossining and Cortlandt, but those schools will have only a limited number of spots.
The Archdiocese of New York announced in November that the Catholic elementary school was one of about 26 in the Archdiocese that were “at-risk” of closing.
