A village in Westchester has appointed its first female police chief.

The Village of Mamaroneck’s Board of Trustees announced that Lt. Sandra DiRuzza was named as the village’s Provisional Police Chief.

DiRuzza succeeds current Village of Mamaroneck Police Chief Christopher Leahy, who is retiring after a 30-year-career in law enforcement.

DiRuzza will be the only woman leading a Westchester police department. Her appointment will be provisional until she takes a civil service exam.

DiRuzza began working in the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department in 2004 and quickly rose through its ranks. In 2008, she was promoted to detective and started the Department’s Domestic Violence Unit.

After being promoted to sergeant and then lieutenant, she quickly gained the trust, respect, and admiration of her colleagues in law enforcement, the village said in a statement.

“We wish to thank Chief Leahy for the amazing job he has done leading our Police Department," Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Tom Murphy said. "We have every confidence that the Village’s Police Department will continue to be well-led under the stewardship of Lieutenant DiRuzza.”

DiRuzza will be sworn-in by Mayor Murphy as the Village’s new Provisional Police Chief at the Village’s Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, Dec. 7.

Chief Leahy’s retirement takes effect on Monday, Nov. 30, and Lt. DiRuzza’s appointment begins after midnight on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
