PEEKSKILL, N.Y. A 15-year-old White Plains boy is in critical condition after being taken to the hospital late Saturday evening after being found unconscious at the Veteran's Memorial Pool in Depew Park, police said.
At 10:25 p.m., four youths scaled an eight-foot-tall fence that secures the pool located in the Depew Park complex, according to police. The teens included three Peekskill boys and the White Plains boy.
Police said the boys entered the pool area, which was closed and unmanned. During their swim, the White Plains boy required medical attention, which the other teens attempted to give. The boys then flagged down a passerby, who climbed the fence and pulled the White Plains teen from the water. One of the youths dialed 911 resulting in emergency service response.
City emergency responders arrived at the park at approximately 10:40 p.m. after receiving a medical aid call. Officer John Marchioni was the first to arrive on scene and immediately began CPR on the youth. Emergency workers were on the case well into the morning hours, according to Peekskill Police Spokesman Sgt. Ray Henderlong.
The victim was first taken to Hudson Valley Hospital Center but later transferred to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla due to the severity of his injuries, Henderlong said.
As of 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, the pool was still closed and county officials were considering it a crime scene as they waited for department of health to do a routine inspection. Representatives from the Peekskill Parks and Recreation Department said the pool may reopen some time Sunday afternoon.
The case remains open pending further investigation.
