Peekskill Police: Beating Victim Hires Lawyer

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – The city man who told Peekskill Police that he was beaten and robbed early Sunday morning on Depew Street has retained a lawyer, according to police.

Police said the 42-year-old Latino man told officers he was assaulted by four or five black males after 1 a.m. on Sunday as he was returning to his home on Depew Street.

The victim said he was unconscious for several hours before coming to and returning to his home at about 6 a.m., at which time his family called police. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for his injuries but has since left the hospital.

Peekskill Police Spokesperson Lt. Eric Johansen said the department was frustrated by the victim's hiring of an attorney because the lawyer he hired is not available to accompany the victim to the station until sometime next week.

"Every day that goes by makes it more difficult to conduct an investigation," Johansen said.

The police department is asking anyone with information on the alleged assault to contact the department at (914) 737-8000.
