PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- A Peekskill man was charged Tuesday with aggravated assault and robbery following a brutal attack Friday on two Hispanic men that left one seriously injured, according to the Peekskill Police.

The attack occurred around 11:30 p.m. Friday on Orchard Street when four black men robbed and attacked two Hispanic men -- one of two similar incidents that occurred in Peekskill over the weekend, said Lt. John White.

The man attacked with a baseball bat received a fractured orbital socket, a fractured skull, a broken wrist and injuries to his fingers, White said. He underwent surgery on Saturday at Westchester Medical Center to repair some of the damage, White said.

There were no arrests in the first attack, White said.

The second incident occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday on South Street in which three black males robbed two Hispanic males, he added.

Police made three address in that attack including Akeem Joseph, 20, Essa McGougain, 21, and Ishamail McGougain, 21. All were charged with felony robbery in the second degree and felony assault in the second degree. Joseph, who has an open case against him, was also charged with domestic violence. Joseph was held on $2,000 bail. The other two were released.

On Monday, White was able to interview the man who was attacked with the baseball bat, he identified Ishamail McGougain as one of the men who attacked and robbed him, White said.

White said the department has had a pattern of robberies of Hispanic men by black males over the past few weeks. The department has been investigating the trend, with several suspects turning up on their radar, White said.

One of those being investigated includes Ishamail McGougain, he added.

White added that the department believes the motives are robbery rather than bias or hate related and that many of the victims are hesitant to come forward to identify their attackers for fear of retaliation.
