PEEKSKILL, N.Y. Fred J. DiDio, a longtime Peekskill resident, died June 29. He was 93.
DiDio was the owner of M.J. McKeon Wine and Liquor Store in Hampton Ridge Shopping Center.
He was born June 29, 1919, in Sicily, Italy, to Nunzio and Rosaria Giglio DiDio. He came to the U.S. as an infant and lived in Peekskill ever since. DiDio graduated from Peekskill High School in 1938.
In World War II, he served with the U.S. Army infantry as a first lieutenant in northern France and Belgium. He received three battle stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. DiDio also served in the Korean War, attaining the rank of captain.
He married Sonja Rode on April 20, 1946, in Luxembourg. In addition to owning a liquor store, he also worked at Standard Brands.
DiDio is survived by a son, Fred J. (Diane) DiDio; and a daughter, Donna (Chuck) Cochran.
His wife died in November of 2001. He also was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., July 7, at Dorsey-Carlone Funeral Home in Peekskill.
