McGill graduated from Binghamton High School in 1982, received his AFA in 1984 from Keystone Junior College, his BFA in 1986 from The School of Visual Arts, completed a summer residency at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and received his MFA in 1989 from Maryland Institute College of Art.
Amongst his many dozens of exhibitions and performances are solo exhibitions that include:
“Front Line, Back Nine” (2016), Boca Raton Museum of Art, Boca Raton, FL, “Baggage” (2010), Russell Projects, Richmond,
“Shaman” (2013) and “Territories” (2015), Pavel Zoubok Gallery, New York
“Club Negro: Experience the Freedom” (2000), Barbara Ann Levy Gallery, New York
His solo performances include 2007’s “Arthur Negro: From Harlem to Hanoi” in Harlem and Hanoi.
His group exhibitions include: “All In” (2012), Bernarducci Meisel Gallery, New York, “The Racial Imagery” (2014), Pitzer Art Galleries, Pitzer College, Claremont, CA, “Black Male Identity: Speak My Name” (2011), The James E. Lewis Museum at Morgan State University, Baltimore and “For the Love of the Game: Race and Sport in African-American Art” (2007), curated by Franklin Sirmans, Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art, Hartford.
Permanent collections include Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Try-Me Collection in Richmond and The Bridge, Bridgehampton, NY. He also had many select awards and residencies.
At the time of his passing, McGill was just promoted to Associate Professor of Art at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (CUNY) in NYC. He previously held teaching positions at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, School of Visual Arts in New York, Westchester Community College and Norwalk Community College
He is survived by his mother Louise DeLorme and his stepfather Bill DeLorme of Binghamton, his sister Carmen (McGill) McCarty of Bowie, MD, and two brothers Joshua DeLorme of Binghamton and Lamont Whiteo of Park City, UT; his brother-in-law Joel McCarty, and sister-in-law Jeannine Feierbach White. He also leaves behind his beloved grandmother Hattie Jones of Arlington, VA, his aunts, Carmen McGill of Poughkeepsie and Kristin Jacobs of Dunn Loring, VA, and uncle, Clarence (Bucky) McGill of Richmond, his nephew William D. McCarty of Bowie, MD, nieces Stella and Clara DeLorme of Binghamton, and Kelsey and Shayna White of Park City, UT, as well as his bonus niece and nephew Jada and Vito Early also of Binghamton, along with many cousins.
A service will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2017, at 11 a.m., at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 56 Cleveland Drive, Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520.
