Peekskill Seeks to Expand Bed and Breakfast Zones

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – The Peekskill Common Council is looking to encourage bed and breakfast establishments in the city by possibly expanding the zones where they would be permitted.

There are currently no bed and breakfast facilities in Peekskill and they are only allowed by special permit in the WF-2 (waterfront) zone. Several residential and commercial zones are being looked at for the use to broaden their appeal to potential business owners.

"We've had a lot of expressions of interest," Planning Director Anthony Ruggiero told council members. "We want to look at what do we have and how do we want to promote it."

Mayor Mary Foster said the idea of having bed and breakfast establishments near the riverfront or close to the downtown was originally thought of as a way of promoting tourism in Peekskill.

"We're not trying to dictate what style house meets the criteria. The challenge becomes you have to have a boundary," she said. "At least it's a good start."

The council is scheduled to discuss the proposal further at a work session in April.
