The Algonquin Gas Transmission line runs 1,100 miles from Pennsylvania to New England and goes through part of the city of Peekskill. The line is owned by Spectra Energy Corp., which plans to enlarge the existing pipeline to increase gas capacity.
"Right now, there is a 36-inch pipe, and they want to increase it to a 42-inch pipe," Acting City Manager Brian Havranek told the Common Council on Monday. "So they are going around to the different municipalities to let everyone know what their intentions are. And they will be notifying property owners. I advised them that I wanted copies of everything that was going out to the property owners."
Work would begin in 2015 or 2016, but the company is already reaching out to municipalities located along the line, Havranek said.
The company wants to hold a public informational meeting in the city. Havranek said he recommended the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Building on McKinley Street because that is the part of town that would be affected.
The pipeline affects homeowners on the southern boundary near Blue Mountain Reserve in Cortlandt and runs along Dickey Brook, he said.
"It goes under Route 9 and then it comes out south of the bypass near the diner," he said.
The pipeline runs at the bottom of the Hudson River, but the company plans to bore a new pipeline under the river.
No date for the information meeting has been set. The city will notify residents once there is a date.
