Peekskill Police Making South Street a Priority

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – Peekskill Police are looking to clamp down on criminal activity on South Street after complaints from residents.

At Monday's Peekskill Committee of the Whole meeting, Mayor Mary Foster said the city recently received letters from two separate residents about drug activity and disruptive neighbors on the 100 block of South Street and one house on that block in particular.  She asked Police Chief Eugene Tumolo what was being done in that neighborhood.

"We have several ongoing investigations that I really can't discuss," Tumolo told Peekskill Common Council members.

The chief said while that neighborhood has gotten considerably safer over the years problems do occasionally arise. He said he would be meeting with neighborhood residents and said he knew which houses the problems were coming from.

"I'll be reaching out to the homeowners and landlords and find out exactly who's living there and what the circumstances are," Tumolo said.

Tumolo told city officials he wanted to address the problem in a way that would help the neighborhood become safer in the long run.

"I want to get to the root – I don't just want to put uniforms on the block and then have the problem subside for a time and then have it return," he said.
