PEEKSKILL, N.Y. - Spring is clearly in the air and litter is visibly on the ground, a situation that isn't sitting well with Peekskill officials.
"There is garbage everywhere. It's filthy. It's depressing," Council member Drew Claxton said of litter near the Peekskill Train Station and Riverfront Green Park.
Mayor Mary Foster also said she has noticed litter throughout the city and she urged residents and other property owners not to wait until Earth Day - April 22 - to start cleaning up.
"Now is the best time. People are waiting until April 21 to clean up their lawns. I really wish they would do it now because it's not like the snow is hiding anything," Foster said. "It's been out there all winter and it isn't getting any prettier letting it sit."
Foster asked Planning Director Anthony Ruggiero to find out when seasonal workers could be brought in to start making a dent in tackling the garbage on the larger city-owned properties and along roadways.
