Peekskill in State of Emergency, Opens Shelter

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – The city will be under a state of emergency as of 10 p.m. Saturday, according to City Manager Rick Finn.

Peekskill High School on Elm Street will be open at 10 p.m. as an emergency shelter. Cots will be available, but residents are urged to bring their own food and water.

Peekskill Fire Department has asked that people call (914) 737-0832 / 0838 for non-emergency conditions such as flooding and trees down. Residents are asked to use 911 only for true emergencies.

Peekskill officials asked residents to prepare as Hurricane Irene approached the area. Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin Saturday night with hurricane conditions possible. The rain could be heavy at times. Winds of nine to 14 miles per hour increasing to between 33 and 43 miles per hour are being predicted and winds could gust as high as 55 miles per hour. Between three and four inches or rain are possible.

On Sunday tropical storm conditions are expected to continue and hurricane conditions are possible. The rain could be heavy at times. The high temperature will be near 73 degrees and winds of 40 to 60 miles per hour are expected. Winds could gust as high as 70 miles per hour. Rainfall amounts in excess of four inches are possible. Showers are expected to dissipate around 9 p.m. Sunday night and temperatures will drop to around 55 degrees. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph.

Residents are asked to monitor the city web site, www.cityofpeekskill.com, for up-to-date information.

In the event of possible evacuations, OEM will post notifications through the Nixle Alert System and on the city website.

There is a strong probability of extended periods without electricity and emergency service personnel could experience delayed response time due to dangerous and impassable obstacles.
