On Anniversary Of Fatal Poughkeepsie Crash, Change In Sentencing Urged

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor and State Sen. Sue Serino will hold a press conference on Monday, Aug. 1 urging the Assembly to pass the "Let the Punishment Fit the Crime" bill.

The press conference comes on the four-year anniversary of the deaths of Shawn and Patrick Wonderly.

The couple was killed when Ryan Floryan ran a red light at the Eastbound Arterial and Worrall Avenue in Poughkeepsie on Aug, 1, 2012.

Floryan is currently serving a six-and-a-half to thirteen year prison sentence for two counts of second-degree manslaughter. Dutchess County Court Judge Stephen Greller wanted to impose a stricter sentence, but could not because current laws require the manslaughter charges to run concurrently since they were the result of a single act.

The proposed bill would allow judges the discretion to sentence killers to consecutive sentences in cases such as the Wonderly deaths.

The State Senate has passed the bill twice, but it stalled in the Assembly.

The press conference will take place at the intersection of Worrall Avenue and Eastbound Route 55 in Poughkeepsie, where the accident took place. It will begin at 4 p.m.
