PEEKSKILL, N.Y. - The city water department will be replacing a water main on Maple Avenue Thursday morning causing some area residents to temporarily lose water.
The department will be replacing a water main on Maple Avenue near Montrose Avenue and Ferris Street starting in the morning hours around 7 a.m., said water superintendent Ed Khuns.
"We have a contractor coming in to replace the valves," Khuns said Wednesday.
Khuns said the work is similar to that done last week on the same street but on a smaller scale.The water department made repairs to a 10-inch water main that broke on Dec. 28 leaving some residents without water. Officials say outdated pipes were to blame for recent repairs, since many are almost a century old.
Very few residents should be impacted Thursday, he said. The road will not be closed while the work is done but will likely be reduced to a single lane.
While the main is being replaced residents living in that area may find themselves without water pressure or low water pressure and possibly discolored water until the work has ended, which should only be a few hours, Khuns said.
The city sent out mailings to residents in areas who may be affected by the work several days ago.
Residents are urged to run their water until discolored water runs clear, and should contact the water department at (914) 734-4150 before 2 p.m. if the discolored water persists.
