Last 12 Months Hottest On Record In Peekskill

NEW YORK, N.Y. – No, it’s not you. The weather in Westchester County actually has, in fact, been hotter this year.

The state, and the country as a whole, is at least two degrees hotter this year, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Climatic Data Center (NOAA).

NOAA’s monthly “State of the Climate” reports that the average temperature in June across the country was 71.2, which contributed to the warmest 12-month period the country has experienced since data started being collected in 1895. States in the northeast corridor from Maryland to Maine all experienced the hottest year on record, as did much of the Midwest and Texas.

While New York State broke no heat records in June (NOAA graded temperatures for the month as normal with above average precipitation), 173 places around the country tied or broke previous marks. The highest was a record 118 in Norton, Kan., on June 28, days after a record 113 was notched on June 25.

The heat waves that swept through Westchester County and much of the northeast this past month sent temperatures soaring in the mid-to-high-90s, and reportedly often felt like it was more than 100 degrees due to the heat index.
