PEEKSKILL, N.Y. Fire officials have yet to determine the cause of a Saturday evening fire that displaced two city families.
Peekskill firefighters received a call just before 7 p.m. Saturday reporting the fire at 1409 Main St., said Chief Lenny Varella.
Two seperate families one a with a 10-day-old child called the building home; they were given aid and shelter by the American Red Cross, Varella said.
The cause of the blaze was still under investigation Sunday afternoon.
"At this time we believe it may have started in the front porch area," Varella said.
The Peekskill Fire Department was given mutual aid by the Buchanan and Mohegan Lake fire departments, while Montrose, Continental Village and Verplanck stood on call in the event of a fire elsewhere in the area.
City police and EMTs also responded to the scene. No emergency responders were injured while extinguishing the fire. A stretch of Main Street was closed for several hours while the fire was being put out and investigated.
While the building suffered extensive damage, firefighters did manage to save the structure, Varella said.
