The Melvin T. Bolden All-American Fishing Derby has become a popular annual event, said Peekskill Senior Recreation Leader Ray Glashoff. The event has been a tradition for about 17 years.

“Last year, we had 89 participants and 79 fish were caught, but that’s not to say the same fish wasn’t caught multiple times,” Glashoff said.

The event, named for former city resident and active volunteer Melvin T. Bolden, is open to youth ages 14 and under. The event is split into three age groups, and prizes are given out for the largest fish caught and the most fish caught.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The derby starts from 9 a.m. and finishes at about 11 a.m. Food is served at 11:30 a.m. There is $5 registration fee.

"We give out gift bags with candy, some fishing lures, some tips on fishing, and then at the end we’ll have some chips and some hot dogs and sodas,“ Glashoff said. "It’s supposed to be a nice day Saturday, and it’s great for families to get out there and fish all together. It’s a fun day.”
