Peekskill Pays Tribute to Fallen on Memorial Day

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. — Peekskill residents and elected officials gathered Monday morning under clear blue skies in Monument Park to pay tribute to those who gave everything for their country.

"Today, Memorial Day, we honor the veterans who are no longer with us," said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Ricardo Singleton of Peekskill in Monday's keynote address (video here).

Singleton reminded everyone that freedom isn't free and said many veterans such as himself missed their children's birthday's and graduations, while others made the ultimate sacrifice.

Singleton has been a member of the U.S. Army for 38 years and provided support in Operation Desert Storm in Iraq and served in Operations Joint Endeavor in Bosnia, Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He recently returned from a tour of duty in Laghman, Afghanistan.

Among those in attendance were Mayor Mary Foster, the Common Council, County Legislator John Testa and Assemblywoman Sandy Galef. American Legion Post 274 Commander John Donohue served as master of ceremonies.

The Peekskill High School band joined the Peekskill Police's own Celia Grabowiecki in performing the national anthem, and city musicians Tim Murphy and Joe Brady also performed.
