Peekskill Man Offering Free Fitness Classes

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. - While obesity continues to be a nationwide epidemic, one man is doing his part to help keep area residents in shape.

Peekskill resident Bob Modica has been holding fitness classes at the Kiley Youth Center on Thursdays for nine months and at the Peekskill Presbyterian Church on Tuesdays for three months. Both free classes are at 7 p.m.

Modica, 51, a union plumber in New York City who works at the World Trade Center project, is an independent coach of the Beachbody workout program.

"I had a big transformation," Modica said. "I lost, like, 60 pounds. I've been doing this for two years now and I became a coach. I help people get healthy and pay it forward a little bit. And it keeps me doing it, and I enjoy it."

The workout is based on training videos sold online, he said.

"It's basically a cardio workout - anywhere from a half hour to 45 minutes - and I follow along with a Beachbody program," Modica said. "I put it up on the screen and we all just follow along. We get sweaty and it's a lot of laughs."

All ages are welcome to take part, Modica said.

"I've had people from six years old to 80 come, and in all shapes and sizes," he said. "Some people are intimidated when they come, but it's not about competition. And it's modifiable, for those who have knee or back issues or if they're overweight."

Modica only asks participants to bring their own water bottle.

"And I ask them to bring a friend," Modica said.

Modica can be contacted at redm1a@aol.com or at (914) 737-7067.
