Peekskill Garden Club to Plant 10,000 Daffodils

PEEKSKILL, NY – Members of the city’s Garden Club and others will be planting 10,000 daffodil bulbs this fall to create a “Daffodil Trail” throughout the city that will bloom in the spring – and they’re looking for help.

The group will start this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sam OItice Heroes Remembered Memorial at the Riverfront Green Park. Future planting dates are Oct. 22 and Nov. 5.

Volunteers are needed to help dig holes and drop in bulbs. It’s an excellent opportunity for friends and family to volunteer together, said Garden Club member Myra Marsocci, who co-chairs the daffodil trail project with fellow member Margaret Hughes.

“We’re doing this to raise awareness, pride in the community and to spur future events that will celebrate this wonderful time in spring,” said Marsocci.

Marsocci said volunteers should bring a shovel or another bulb planting device, newspaper or tarp to throw dirt on, gloves, water and a grocery bag to carry the bulbs in. If a volunteer doesn’t have a shovel, there will be extras to share.

The planned trail begins at Riverfront Green Park near the Sam Oitice Heroes Remembered 9/11 Memorial and runs along Central Avenue, near the Yellow Brick Road and up through town to the hillside behind Peekskilll High School and out to Route 6.

To volunteer or for more information, call Marsocci at (914) 528-7859.
