Peekskill Celebration Seeks Dragon Boat Teams

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. - This year's Peekskill Celebration will be held Aug. 3-4 at Riverfront Green Park, and organizers are looking for teams to participate in the dragon boat races.

Business, community and cancer awareness teams are encouraged to register before July 10 for the races, to be held Saturday, Aug. 4.

There are several changes to the race this year, according to Executive Director Cathy Montaldo. In order to accommodate the growing interest in the sport by cancer teams, the cancer awareness races will be extended to a full morning of competition, while the community focused teams will compete in the afternoon.

Also, the celebration is partnering with Empire Dragons, a cancer survivor and dragon boat support team from New York City, to boost participation and raise awareness. Hudson Valley Hospital Center is the signature sponsor of the cancer races.

“Dragon boating is the perfect team-building exercise for businesses and nonprofits, and is a popular rehabilitative sport for cancer survivors because it involves physical training with people who are facing similar challenges. Cancer-related teams use dragon boating to build camaraderie out on the beautiful Hudson River,” Montaldo said.

Sponsorship/registration fees are $1,200 per dragon boat for business and nonprofits, and $800 for cancer awareness teams. Registration forms and a complete list of rules and regulations can be downloaded from the event’s website.

If a business is unable to participate but would like to sponsor a nonprofit group, there is a waiting list of prospective teams that need funding. For more information, call (914) 736-2000.
