PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- The city is now accepting nominations for its annual Black History Month recognitions.
Every February, Peekskill celebrates Black History Month by honoring outstanding African-American members of the community. The honor is based on personal or professional achievements, civic contributions or general good deeds that have been positive for Peekskill.
The person does not necessarily have to be a current Peekskill resident but had to have contributed over the course of their life to the city, said Pamela Beach, city clerk.
Past honorees include the Rev. Jeanette Phillips and Peekskill School Board trustee Tuesday McDonald. Among last year's honorees were Peekskill schools employee Jason Paige, who was honored posthumously after his sudden death.
The honorees will be celebrated during the first city council meeting in February, which happens to be on Valentine's Day.
Residents looking to nominate a fellow community member should send a detailed letter of nomination to the city including newspaper clippings, resumes or other articles they feel support the nominees induction.
Nominations must be received at Peekskill City Hall by Jan. 6. Nomination letters should be sent along with the nomination form posted on the city website to City of Peekskill, 840 Main St., Peekskill, NY 10566. Nominations should be marked to the attention of Pamela Beach, city clerk.
