Hip Hop 4 Health Program Kicks Off at The Summit

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Starting on January 19 free Hip Hop 4 Health classes are being held for children ages 9 to 15 courtesy of Hudson River Health Care (HRRC) and Mount Olivet Baptist Church.

The events will be held on Mondays at 6 p.m. and Thursdays at 7 p.m. at The Summit, which is located at 1432 Park Street across from Mount Olivet Baptist Church.

On Thursday, Jan. 19 there will be a demonstration class to learn new moves with dance instructor, Christian Morel.  The classes will then meet on Jan. 23, 26, 30 and Feb. 2.  Anyone who attends four of the classes will receive a free gift.

HRHC Director of Health Education Services Liz Phillips said the program is intended to be a new way to encourage heathy living in the community.

"We wanted to think about creative ways to involve the community in physical activity. The church has actually been doing fitness ministry for almost ten years, but this is the first offering that's youth friendly," Phillips said.

Youth who attend should be dressed to dance in active wear but don't need to being anything else with them. Phillips said the music that will be played will be family-friendly.

"When we think about music, there's a lot of influences out there but we're going to use something that's positive," Phillips said. "It's going to be a lot of house music so it will be all about the beat and not much in terms of lyrics."

The program is part of Project HOPE, a faith-based health promotion effort by Hudson River HealthCare with support from the Westchester Community Foundation, a nonprofit community endowment.
