In an announcement on Monday, May 13, the Irvington Union Free School District revealed it has selected Mara Ratesic as its new superintendent.
Ratesic, who will begin in the position on Monday, July 1, will be formally appointed to the role during a special Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, May 15 at 7 p.m.
The current Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction at the Bronxville Union Free School District, Ratesic was chosen out of over 50 candidates following a thorough search process.
"Dr. Ratesic exemplifies the qualities identified by our community in the leadership profile," said Board of Education President Brian Friedman, who continued, "She is a strong instructional leader with a deep understanding of curriculum and professional development who supports and mentors staff and is passionate about creating the best educational experience for all students."
Before her work in Bronxville, Ratesic, who has more than two decades of educational experience, served as principal of Public School #77 in New York City. She also taught elementary school in Maryland.
Ratesic expressed excitement about starting the new role.
"I am honored and humbled to have been selected as the next superintendent of the Irvington Union Free School District, and I want to thank the Board of Education for this exceptional opportunity,” Ratesic said.
She continued, "The Irvington School District is known for its academic excellence, its commitment to having each student reach their highest potential, and the well-being of their students. I am looking forward to working collaboratively with the leadership team, faculty, parents, and Board of Education in support of the wonderful students throughout the district.”
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Ratesic holds a bachelor of arts from the University of Pittsburgh and master's degrees from Columbia University in Curriculum and Instruction and George Mason University in Educational Leadership.
She also obtained her doctorate of education in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration on multicultural education at Teachers College, Columbia University.
