New Rochelle resident Francis Voltaire was arrested on Wednesday, Nov. 6 following an incident earlier in the day that occurred on Lispenard Avenue in New Rochelle, according to the city's police department.
At around 6 a.m., a homeowner noticed suspicious activity on her Ring security camera, which allegedly showed Voltaire trying to break into her residence. He had previously burglarized the same Lispenard Avenue home in August 2023, police said.
As Voltaire forced his way in through a lower window, knocking out an air conditioning unit in the process, the victim and her daughter called 911, according to the department.
Arriving officers then established a perimeter around the home and ordered Voltaire to surrender. As he was exiting through the same lower window, Voltaire was apprehended without incident, police said.
According to New Rochelle Police, the burglary victim has an active Temporary Order of Protection against Voltaire from his previous burglary.
Voltaire told officers that his grandmother once lived at the victim's residence, but no direct relationship between the two has been confirmed. Voltaire's exact intent is still unclear and the incident is still under investigation, police said, adding that he will remain in custody.
Voltaire is now charged with:
- Second-degree burglary;
- First-degree criminal contempt.
