A police officer in the region is recovering after suffering an overdose of fentanyl he was exposed to while investigating drug use in a vehicle. The incident took place in Dutchess County in the city of Poughkeepsie around 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13 in the 300 block of Mill Street. NY Health Commissioner Orders All Pharmacies To Carry Overdose Medication Naloxone
Pharmacies in New York will soon be required to carry and dispense naloxone, the medicine used to quickly reverse the life-threatening effects of an opioid overdose. The state’s health commissioner, Dr. Mary Bassett, issued a statewide standing order for all pharmacies to carry the medication and dispense it without a prescription beginning Monday, Aug. 15. “This is as close as we can get to naloxone being 'over the counter' without action being taken by the US Food and Drug Administration,” Bassett said. Colleges are issuing warnings about fentanyl-laced Adderall after one student died and another is in critical condition after using the fake drug. Off-Duty Police Officer Saves Overdose Victim In Area
A man was saved from an overdose death by the quick actions of a police officer in the area. The incident took place on Friday, June 4, in Orange County. Port Jervis Police Officer Ryan Kievit, while off duty, was traveling in his personal vehicle on Route 6 and observed a pick-up truck stopped perpendicular in the roadway blocking both lanes of travel near a curve in the road, said Chief William Worden. Police saved the same Rockland man from three near-fatal overdoses in the span of 24 hours. Officers from the Ramapo Police Department were dispatched to the same local home three times during a 24-hour period on Thursday, where there were separate reports of a medical emergency. Police Use Narcan To Rescue Overdose Victim In Rockland
Some quick-acting police officers in Rockland County may have saved the life of a potential overdose victim in Airmont. Members of the Ramapo Police Department were dispatched to an Airmont home late on Labor Day, where there was a report of a male overdose victim. The officers jumped into action, administering Naloxone (Narcan) to the victim, who was revived.
