Hero Teen Who Died In Attempted Ramapo Lake Rescue Had Bright Future Ahead Matthew Poole had a bright future ahead.  Poole sacrificed it all in a courageous attempt to save fellow 17-year-old Livingston High School senior Isabella Brodsky when she was overcome by the tumultuous waters of Ramapo Lake during Tuesday's rainstorm. Both died. More than $33,000 had been raised as of Thursday morning for Poole's family on a GoFundMe page, where the teen is being hailed a hero for his act of bravery. He and Brodsky were mourned during a vigil outside the school Wednesday night. "Matt was a great friend and an overall outstanding person," Allison Foster wrote.…

Bergen Native Dies At Age 13 Eric D. Berninger of Wayne died Sunday, April 22. He was 13 years old. Eric was born in Ridgewood and lived in Wayne. He a student at the Horizon School in Livingston and loved the beach, books and Mickey Mouse. He is survived by his mom Juliet (nee) Passero and dad David Berninger; siblings Nicholas, Luke and Deanna; grandparents the Honorable Robert Passero and his wife Phyllis, and Lucina Berninger; great-grandmother Joan Ferro; along with a host of aunts, uncles and cousins. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Mary Therese Rose Fund.

Mahwah Woman, 87, Severely Burned When Robe Catches Fire MAHWAH, N.J. -- An 87-year-old Mahwah woman suffered second- and third-degree burns after her robe caught fire Saturday as she tried to avoid a spilling pot of boiling water, authorities said. The woman's 84-year-old sister doused the flames, which didn't extend to their home in Bogert's Trailer Ranch on Pulis Avenue, Lt. Jeff Dino said. The victim was boiling a pot of water on the stove just before noon at Bogert's Trailer Ranch when it suddenly spilled, Dino said.
