Orangetown police officers along with firefighters from the Pearl River and Nanuet fire departments responded to 66 Lombardi Road about 2:15 p.m. after the fire was reported to authorities, police said.
Firefighters extinguished the flames and remained on the scene until about 4:45 p.m. Authorities did not report any significant damage or injuries.
According to police, the homeowner told investigators that she was trying to start the car inside the garage when she heard a loud noise. The car began to smoke and then burst into flames, police said.
Orangetown police said that the Rockland County Sheriff's Department Bureau of Criminal Investigation also responded to the scene.
