Orangetown Police Charge Spring Valley Man With Vehicular Assault

TAPPAN, N.Y. -- Orangetown police have charged a man from Spring Valley with vehicular assault following an automobile accident that resulted in physical injuries to both the driver and his passenger, police said.

Police responded to a one-car motor vehicle accident with injuries on Route 303 on Sunday, police report.

The operator of the vehicle, identified as Jose D. Cruz, 31, along with the only passenger in the vehicle, a 34-year-old woman from Spring Valley, were extricated from the vehicle by the Tappan Fire Department and transported to Nyack Hospital by the South Orangetown Ambulance Corps and Rockland Paramedic Services, officials report.

Both parties sustained serious injuries in the accident and were subsequently transported to Westchester Medical Center, according to police.

Cruz was charged with second-degree vehicular assault, a felony, driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, police report.

He is due to appear in Orangetown Justice Court, according to officials.

The Orangetown Police Department Accident Investigation Team is working with the Detective Bureau to investigate the accident.
