Man Displays Knife In Theft Attempt At Pearl River ShopRite, Police Say

A 38-year-old man threatened employees at the ShopRite in Pearl River while displaying a knife after attempting to leave the supermarket on Friday with numerous items stuffed in his pants, Orangetown police said.

Steven Rutkowski of Newburgh was restrained after threatening store employees with the knife and pushing one employee to the ground just before 2 p.m., police said.

Store security employees and Rutkowski engaged in a scuffle, police said, the suspect pushing one of the employees to the ground and, at some point, displaying a knife.

He has been charged felony robbery, felony weapon possession, misdemeanor possession of stolen property, petit larceny and menacing. 

He was arraigned remanded to the Rockland County Jail.
