“Originally, they thought that it was more than one home because of the time of the night and the smoke and the flame,” Fairview Sgt. Brendan O’Reilly said.

Authorities aren’t immediately sure what sparked the fire at 412 Cliff Street, which broke out around 12:30 a.m. The house is on a tightly packed street across from Fairview’s No. 3 elementary school.

Three residents were hospitalized with smoke inhalation, and a Ridgefield firefighter was treated, as well — “nothing serious that we were told,” O’Reilly said.

Investigators will determine the cause, the sergeant said.
