Maria Knaus, 91, Of Pearl River

PEARL RIVER, N.Y. -- Maria Knaus, a resident of Pearl River, died Thursday, May 12. She was 91.

Born Nov. 30, 1924 in Stockendorf, Gottschee, Slovenia, she was the daughter of Mathias and Mary Schmuck.

She emigrated to Austria and then to Ridgewood, N.Y., in 1950 and had resided in Pearl River for the past 59 years. Locally, she was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s Church and a member of the Blessed Mother Sodality.

She was predeceased by her husband, Valentin; her twin sister, Rose and a sister, Lily.

She is survived by her children Dorothy Knaus of Lawrenceville, N.J., Arlene Hazzard (Jeff) of Ravena, N.Y., Arthur Knaus of Nanuet; and her grandchildren, Serena and Jordan Hazzard, and Anthony Knaus.

Visiting will be Sunday, May 15, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, May 16, at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Nanuet. Burial will follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
