NYACK, N.Y. — Elizabeth P. “Betty” Cameron, fondly known as "Bets," died peacefully June 21, 2016 at Nyack Manor Nursing Home. She was 84.
She was born Nov. 24, 1931, in Albany, the daughter of Margaret (Diederich) and Max Pollet, and step-daughter of Arthur D. Patterson.
She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Maxine Mitchell.
A 1949 graduate of Bennett High School in Buffalo, she attended the University of Buffalo for nurse’s training, working at Buffalo General Hospital.
She and Bruce were married in 1951 in Indian Town Gap, Pa. They moved to Buffalo and then in 1957 moved to the family homestead at 268 South Boulevard.
Cameron was a woman who gave back to her community and was active in the Jaycees, Girl Scouts, Eastern Star, Nyack Schools PTA, Morning Music Club, the Saturday Night Poker Club, bridge clubs, the Nyack Field Club and the First Reformed Church of Nyack. She was the first woman to be president of the Nyack Field Club, as well as the first woman to be installed on Consistory at the First Reformed Church.
Their house in Upper Grand View was party central with many a pool party, New Year’s party, holiday meal, kid’s birthday party, you name it. She was truly the hostess with the mostest! She always was the life of the party and loved getting together with family and friends.
She is survived by her husband of almost 65 years, Bruce Cameron; sons, Bruce Cameron Jr (Pam) of St. Charles, Ill. and James Y. Cameron (Diona) of Nyack; daughters, Margaret MacCartney (fiancée Rick) of Altamont, and Carolyn Travers (Chuck) of Valley Cottage; grandchildren, Robert (Kelly), Jeff (Lisa), Christopher (Kim), Matthew (Katelynn), Cat MacCartney Schiff (Matt), Cameron Travers (Allie), and Caileigh Travers; eight great-grandchildren, Ryan, Cara, Ben, Emily, Lauren, Tessa, Louie and James; and sister, Christine Nieman of East Aurora.
Calling hours will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, July 7 at Hannemann’s Funeral Home, 88 S. Broadway, Nyack. A celebration memorial service of her life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 8 at The First Reformed Church, 18 S. Broadway, Nyack. Interment will be private at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo.
