ORANGETOWN, N.Y. -- There's Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. Now's there #GivingTuesday that promotes giving by encouraging people and organizations to give to good causes among all commercialism of the holidays, according to lohud.com.
And that was an idea the students of St. Thomas Aquinas College could get behind and have been working hard to promote with local businesses from New Jersey to New York, said lohud.com.
One of the many businesses they tempted was Lucille Skroce, owner of Matisse Chocolatier, a well-known Englewood, New Jersey, candy store with an outpost in Orangeburg. The students, told her about a social media campaign called #GivingTuesday and she agreed to take part, reported lohud.com.
Locally, dozens of nonprofits in the Lower Hudson Valley are planning major #GivingTuesday projects including the Northeast Stem Starter Academy in Mount Vernon, CANDLE in Rockland, Andrus Children's Center in Yonkers, ArtsWestchester and many more, reported lohud.com.
Started in 2012, #GivingTuesdsay, was created by executive Henry Timms, who wanted others to take a day a year to think of those in need. The program has grown so popular that last year's effort generated a total of 32.7 million Twitter impressions and raised $45.6 million, said lohud.com.
